China and Japan have a history of literary exchanges spanning thousands of years, with both sides sharing, integrating and learning from each other.Since the new era, contemporary Chinese literature has attracted increasing attention from Japanese academics and readers. As one of the most effective writers of Chinese contemporary literature,Yu Hua’s works have been widely acclaimed in Japan, especially his long novels, which have been on the top of the bestseller list for years, becoming a typical example of the overseas dissemination of Chinese contemporary literature.Japan is an overseas communication field with cultural similarities to China, and its reception of Yu Hua’s long novels highlights the ’meaning-making’ and ’literary communication effectiveness’ of the novels themselves. This thesis focuses on three issues, namely, the worldwide value of Yu Hua’s long novels, their dissemination in Japan and their reception by Japanese academics and general readers, and the attribution of their dissemination and reception in Japan. The thesis is divided into the following four chapters. The first chapter discusses Yu Hua’s person and the worldwide value of his long novels.Using Yu Hua’s six long novels,Cries in the Drizzle,To live,Chronicle of a Blood Merchant,Brothers,The Seventh Day,and Wencheng as the object of study,it analyses the characteristics that facilitate their dissemination and reception, mirroring the reception attributions that follow. The second chapter discusses the dissemination of Yu Hua’s novels in Japan, including two parts: the main body of dissemination and the means of dissemination. The former analyzes the Japanese translations of Yu Hua’s novels from the perspective of translation, while the latter examines two forms of dissemination: paper and electronic media, and then investigates how the two form a positive interaction and promote the dissemination of Yu Hua’s novels in Japan. The third chapter explores the current state of reception in Japan, taking two representative long novels of Yu Hua’s creative career,To live and Brothers,as examples.Placing these two works under the research horizon of heterogeneous cultures is undoubtedly of revelatory value in exploring the literary tensions of Yu Hua’s works and their expansion of meaning in cultural dialogue. This chapter focuses on general readers and professional readers in academia, and explores the epistemological differences in the reception of Yu Hua’s long novels by overseas readers through two different modes of literary reception represented by the two types of readers,so as to provide references for the outreach of contemporary Chinese literature. The fourth chapter discusses the reasons for the acceptance of Yu Hua’s long novels in Japan. The reasons can be studied at two levels: the cultural soil between China and Japan and the characteristics of Yu Hua’s works themselves.Overall, the thesis is structured in a progressive mode, analyzing the cultural and literary factors that influence the dissemination of contemporary Chinese literature by analyzing its dissemination channels and reader acceptance patterns, with the aim of providing a deeper reference for the overseas dissemination of contemporary Chinese literature.
