This paper is a report based on the C-E translation project of the portrait stamp album named Outstanding Overseas Chinese Profile.From the perspective of Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory,this report analyzes the difficulties encountered in the C-E translation of21 essays translated by the author through 30 typical cases from two aspects,namely,adaptation to the communicative context and adaptation to the linguistic context,and brings forth some specific translation techniques and methods,with a view to providing future translators with some insights for improving translation quality of publicity materials.Specifically,in terms of the adaptation to the communicative context,for overwhelming examples,semantic repetitions,and flowery expressions,generalization,omission,and rewriting can be used flexibly to make an adaptation to the mental world of both sides of the communication.For geographical names,addition can be adopted to make the target text adapt to the physical world of the target readers.For cultural-loaded words and award names,free translation and idiomatic translation can be employed to adapt to the social background of target readers.In terms of the adaptation to the linguistic context,for lexical repetitions,nonsubject sentences,and sentences with successive verbs,conversion of cohesive devices,addition of subjects,and addition of conjunctions can be adopted to make the target text adapt to the features in contextual cohesion of the target language.For logic-confusing expressions,conversion of sentence order can be performed to make the target text clear.For titles that cannot clearly show the topic or summarize the content of the text,transcreation can be adopted to make the title and the main body of the essay situated intertextually in the text.For long paragraphs with unclear focuses,paragraph-splitting and addition of topic sentences can be employed to adapt to the paragraph pattern of the target language.This report puts forward practical translation techniques and methods for enhancing the credibility,attractiveness,and communication effect of the target text of Outstanding Overseas Chinese Portrait,not only conducive to better publicizing the outstanding contributions of overseas Chinese to international exchanges and economic growth,thus presenting a more authentic and positive image of China to overseas readers,but also expanding the research perspective of the C-E translation of publicity materials and enriching its research results. |
