A Translation Report Of Still Life From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

The source text of this translation report is excerpted from the novel Still Life by Sarah Winman,a budding British writer.The author is good at characterization and narration of events of great spans.This report focuses on the translation of dialogues between characters in novels,and applies Jef Verschueren’s contextual adaptation theory to keep the translation faithful to the original,so that Chinese readers can better understand the story that took place in a particular era.This translation report focuses on two aspects: linguistic context adaptation and communicative context adaptation,paying attention to the translation of rhetorical devices,literary genre,style and logical structure of the text.Meanwhile,it also explores the impact of the psychological,social and physical factors on the translation of characters’ dialogue,background,personality,emotions and physical description.During translation practice,the translator needs to pay attention to the overall logical sequence of the text,objective conditions and individual differences of events and dialogues between characters,adapt to the source text by means of additional translation,free translation and grammatical conversion,and translate in accordance with the reading habits and common sense understanding of the target language readers.This report combines theory and practice to explore the translation strategies,methods,and principles of character dialogue and environmental description in Still Life under the guidance of contextual adaptation theory.It aims to apply the theory of contextual adaptation in translation and provides new cases and ideas for the translation of character dialogue while adhering to the theme,style,and character portrayal of the original work.
