This is an English-Chinese translation project of Bernard Shaw,a biography written by Michael Holroyd who is famous as a writer and editor. When writing biography for Shaw,Michael Holroyd tried to give a full description of him,in which he narrated Shaw’s family, writing, career, ideas on drama and politics, including both compliment and criticism. It shows an ambivalent and complex subject to readers. As a biography,Bernard Shaw has both documentary and literary characteristics. The author chooses Toury’s Norm Theory,a descriptive translation theory,as a guide.Toury holds that initial norms, preliminary norms and operational norms influence the translation.Initial norms determine the translation strategies, and the author chooses the orientation towards target-language.Operational norms guide the translator how to practice the translation skills. At the lexical level, this paper mainly analyses how to deal with the meaning extension of words.Skills like sequential translation and transformation translation are used at the syntactic level. As for the discourse level, this paper lays emphasis on the translation of rhetorical sentences and culture-loaded information in which addition, subtraction and interpretation are used.In this way,the meaning and style of the source text can be achieved in the translation.
