A Study On The Ruins Image In Western WWⅠ-themed And WWⅡ-themed Films

The research object of this paper is the image of ruins in Western WWI-themed and WWⅡ-themed films from 1914 to 2023,by using film theory or liter1 ary theory.This paper mainly consists of five parts:The introduction chapter is about the overview of previous research results on the aesthetics of ruins and Western WWI-themed and WWⅡ-themed films,so as to clarify some concepts related to this research,expound the research purpose,establish the research scope and define the research methods.The first chapter is about the historical origin of aesthetics of ruins and its affinity with the ruins image in Western WWI-themed and WWⅡ-themed films.In addition,this chapter works through the development of the ruins image in Western WWI-themed and WWⅡ-themed films from 1914 to 2023.The second chapter focuses on the spatial construction of the ruins image in Western WWI-themed and WWⅡ-themed films and some kind of atmosphere in these films,and shows the mechanism that how those ruins spaces reflect the inner damage the war did to people and society.The material details of the ruins in WWI-themed and WWⅡ-themed films are sorted into four categories: the trench ruins of World War I,the terrain ruins of World War II,the body ruins and the building ruins.At the same time,it shows the the way how the atmosphere of religion,nature and giant objects works in the the ruins space.The third chapter,focuses on the way the ruins image in Western WWI-themed and WWⅡ-themed films is arranged,and sorts out four types of the arranging process:recording ruins,patterning ruins,recurring ruins and inventing ruins,which shows the ruins image in Western WWI-themed and WWⅡ-themed films is arranged sometimes close to the historical reality and sometimes far from it.The fourth chapter,based on the dual textual attributes of the ruins image,shows how the ruins image exert an influence on Western WWI-themed and WWⅡ-themed films in the following three aspects: film creation tendency,film structure and film reflection,so as to clarify the values of ruins image in Western WWI-themed and WWⅡ-themed films.Generally speaking,this paper aims to observe the connotation and extension of the development of Western WWI-themed and WWⅡ-themed films from the perspective of aesthetics of ruins,so as to provide a new perspective for the study of WWI-themed and WWⅡ-themed films.
