A Report On The Practice Of English-Chinese Translation Of ICT Texts In Machine Translation And Post-Editing

The dramatic growth of computer and network technology underpins and improves modern translation technology.However,compared to the work of a professional translator,the translation generated by machine translation still needs improvement and polishing in terms of fluency and accuracy.Therefore,It is advisable for translators to refine their translation during post-editing and proofreading.This thesis is an English-Chinese translation practice report,in which the author uses Deep L to translate selected texts through a combination of machine translation and post-editing.The source material of this translation is excerpted from Global Connectivity Report 2022,published on the official website of the International Telecommunication Union(ITU).The text type is informative and suitable for the post-editing of machine translation;the report details the progress and shortcomings of digital connectivity,along with providing reference and examples for countries and regions to develop digital economy and society.In dealing with such informative texts in science and technology,the author finds that Deep L can effectively translate the general information,but there are still problems in the detailed processing of lexical,syntactic,textual and formatting aspects.The problems at Lexical level are mainly manifested in wrong lexical meaning,mistranslation and omission of abbreviations,and lexical redundancy;while the problems at syntactic level include confusing sentence order,illogical sentences,and lack of contextual meaning;and the problems at textual level are primarily expressed in the lack of coherence and cohesion as well as the corresponding formatting problems.In response to these problems,the author,guided by the relevant translation principles,adopts post-editing skills,such as addition and retranslation to ensure the quality of the translations.Based on the author’s practice of translation,by combining machine translation with post-editing,the information of the source text can be translated more accurately and the fluency of the translation can be guaranteed.The author has deepened his insight into the field of digital network connection and improved his translation ability.It is hoped that this translation practice report can provide useful references for other practitioners and help scholars in related fields to explore new translation modes while providing some references.
