Report On English Translation Of Section Two In Chapter One Of Inter-Ethnic Political Integrations In Multi-Ethnic States

Inter-ethnic political integration,which is a type of ethnic politics,is the process for a multi-ethnic state to maintain its state unity and stability through coordinating its interethnic political relations.It is an increasingly prominent theoretical and practical problem that needs to be solved in the political reality of multi-ethnic states.Inter-ethnic political integrations make a new field of academic research,and some related studies have been carried out,which have reaped considerable academic achievements.China’s achievements of ethnic work and Chinese scholars’ research accomplishments concerned with the inter-ethnic political integrations of China as well as other multi-ethnic states are calling for translators to introduce them to the outside world so as to deepen the communication with Western readers and particularly scholars with regard to political integration studies.Therefore,translating academic works of inter-ethnic political integration studies is of academic significance and practical value.Professor Zhou Ping’s monograph Inter-ethnic Political Integrations in Multi-ethnic States is the final result of his key project supported by China National Fund for Social Sciences in 2008.Up to now,there has been no English translation of the book available,and therefore,its English translation and related analysis is original.The translator selected more than 15,000 words in Section Two of Chapter One of the book as her object of translation.The original text pertains to contemporary academic works,which is a nonliterary text of social sciences,showing objectivity,logic,careful thinking and other characteristics.On the basis of her understanding of the original text and analysis of the translation task,the translator implemented the translation project and wrote her translation report,including four chapters: the task description of the translation project,translation process description,case analysis,and conclusion.The difficulties in translating the original text are as follows: On the lexical level,how to translate the terms and concepts about the state,nation,and ethnicity mentioned therein with conceptual accuracy;On the syntactic level,how to translate the long and structurally involved sentences and treat the intra-sentence coherence and cohesion;On the textual level,how to accurately grasp the original content and logical relationship between sentences and between paragraphs and construct the translated text which is readable and displays proper academic profile.On the basis of referring to relevant literature and parallel texts,the translator applies the strategy for translating the realistic type of texts,the syntactic approach to the basic language operation,and various translation techniques in an attempt to reach the requirement for academic publication in English.The completion of this translation project may be conducive to communication between China and the West on the study of inter-ethnic political integrations,and meanwhile,through the process,the translator has deepened her understanding of academic Chinese-English translation,improved her academic translation ability,and also been aware of her shortcomings and the future direction of her efforts to train herself to be a competent translator.
