Yuri Kochiyama is a famous Japanese American civil rights activist in the 20 th century.During World War II her family and other 120,000 Japanese Americans was forcibly removed from their home to detention camps. While at a camp in Arkansas,Yuri came face-to-face with the segregation of the Jim Crow system. The similarities between the oppression of African Americans and the discrimination against Japanese Americans made Yuri gradually unite with the African American community. The Asian American movement she led was inspired by the African American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960 s,which was part of the major struggles of the ’60s and ’70s.Yuri was dedicated to creating intersectional solidarity between the African American and Asian American communities, and to opposing systemic injustice. She advocated for many remarkable causes, including Black separatism,anti-war movements,Asian American movements, redress for Japanese Americans,Puerto Rican independence movement, and other minority rights. In general, she was a vibrant social activist who played a significant role in the American social movements, fighting against discrimination, oppression, war and violence, and advocating for peace, democracy and cross-cultural solidarity. This article will discuss the practice of civil rights activities of Yuri Kochiyama from the three parts. The first part is the introduction, which mainly introduces the reasons for choosing this topic, the significance of the research, the research status of related topics at home and abroad,as well as the research methods and innovation of this dissertation. The second part is the body part, which consists of four chapters.Chapter one sorts out the early experience of Yuri Kochiyama. Before World War II,Yuri was a person who did not care about politics and extreme patriotism. The outbreak of World War II,her father’s arrest, detention in internment camps, and mainstream society’s differential treatment of Japanese Americans made her rethink her culture and background.Yuri met many like-minded people in the detention camp.Growing up with them strengthened her awareness of Japanese identity as a Nisei.Married to her husband and moved to New York, she became exposed to the civil rights movement and became involved in some political activities.Chapter two explores the transformation of Yuri from pacifism into radicalism, and her participation on the African American Civil Rights Movement.Malcolm X is the leader of the Black Radicalism Civil Rights Movement, his radical ideas inspired Yuri’s exploration and pursuit of civil rights.Through the relationship with Malcolm, studying in African American schools and joining the Republic of New Africa,Yuri’s political views had shifted from integration and non-violence to self-determination and self-defense.At the same time,as Yuri participated in the civil rights movement more and more aggressively, she was facing the pressure brought by the police and the federal investigation bureau. These things forced her to make some difficult trade-offs.Chapter three discusses a series of radical civil rights actions that Yuri participated in,including leading the Asian American movement, fighting for redress of Japanese Americans, supporting the Puerto Rican independence movement, and defensing for political criminals. This was the most influential part of her civil rights activism.Yuri appealed to the world: the poorest and most marginalized people are fighting brave struggle. Each ethnic group has the right to choose their own ideology, establish the rights of their own country, get recognition and respect in the international community, and interdependence becoming a part of the world’ s big family. The fourth chapter evaluates the civil rights activities of Yuri.A series of civil rights activities she participated not only enhanced Asian identity, inspired the majority of Asian young people to participate in the struggle for their own rights, but also promoted the unity and cooperation of Asian and African Americans.Although the contribution and influence of Yuri in the American civil rights movement cannot be ignored, her activities were constrained and limited to some extent due to the limitations of history and the times. The third part is the conclusion. We can conclude that the civil rights activities of Yuri are not only defending the freedom of citizens, but reflecting a revolutionary,anti-imperialist ideology. At the same time,it is also a microcosm of the general people’s influence of social change in the last century.
