| This is a report on the translation of Chapters 9-10 of The Five-Million-Year Odyssey : the Human Journey from Ape to Agriculture, written by Peter Bellwood. The book mainly illustrates upon the origin of human antecessors and relations between human migration and the spread of language families around the world. The translation of this book is not only conducive to domestic sociology and modern anthropology, but also to national public policy-making.This report focuses on how the translation shift theory by Catford guides the translation of human and social science text. The translation project deals with texts of human and social science, dominated by a large quantity of subordinated structures, parentheses and non-predicates.Therefore,the difficulties in translation include division of subordinate structures, selection of the headwords followed by diverse parentheses or non-predicates and reconstruction of the sentences.By utilizing the translation shift theory synthetically on the conditions of translation equivalence between ST and TT,the translator adopted translation techniques of shifts, like structure-shift,class-shift and unit-shift,aiming to conduct translation practices with the assistance of classical translation theory, thus providing reference to translation practices involved in translation shifts theory. |
