A Report On The Translation Of Your One Wild And Precious Life(Chapter 1-3)

This is an English-Chinese translation report.The source text is selected from Your One Wild and Precious Life,which was written by Maureen Gaffney,a famous Irish psychologist and writer.Taking the key stages of our life,the author traces the arc of psychological development as people proceed through the different life stages from infancy to old age and elaborates on how to tackle developmental tasks at each stage of life.The selected section for translation is the first three chapters of the book,which mainly explain the fundamental psychological drives.This translation report aims to help readers see the different stages of life in a new way and provide guidance for them to understand their own development.According to Newmark’s classification of text types,the source text is an informational text,which aims to convey information to readers,so the translation should pay attention to the accuracy of information and communicative effect.Therefore,the translator mainly adopts Newmark’s communicative translation theory to guide this translation practice.This report is mainly divided into five chapters.Chapter one is a brief introduction to the translation report,including its background and significance.Chapter two gives the detailed information of the source text,analyzing the author,main content and linguistic features.Chapter three introduces Newmark’s communicative translation and semantic translation theories;Chapter four focuses on the difficulties encountered by the translator in the process of translation,such as the translation of adjectives,colloquial expressions and metaphors.To overcome these difficulties,the translator has used translation skills including conversion,paraphrase and substitution.Chapter five is a conclusion of the translation report,including the enlightenment obtained by the translator in the process of translation and some problems that need to be solved.
