This paper takes 75 Buddhist scriptures with a total of 1335 volumes translated by Xuanzang,a master of the Three Collections of the Tang Dynasty, and the only work "The Great Tang Dynasty Record of the Western Regions" as documentary materials, takes personal names(in a broad sense)as the research object, qualitatively and quantitatively investigates and analyzes the names of people in Xuanzang’s translation from the perspective of linguistics, and summarizes the syllabic characteristics, translation habits and reasons for similarities and differences in the translation of personal names in Xuanzang’s translation of Buddhist scriptures,in order to provide ideas for subsequent research on personal names of Buddhist scriptures. This paper first reviews the current research status from two aspects: "Linguistic Research on Xuanzang’s Translations" and "Research on Buddhist Scripture Personal Names".It can be found that although Xuanzang, the master of the Sanzang of the Tang Dynasty, was well-known in China, the scholarly research on the language and writing of Xuanzang’s works was scattered and unsystematic;Although the research on Buddhist sutra names has a variety of research directions, the research content is fragmented and the total amount of research is small. Therefore, the significance of Xuanzang’s translation of personal name research and the specific materials, methods and approaches of research were established.Secondly, the overall description of the names of people in Xuanzang’s translated works is unfolded, and Xuanzang’s translations and works are statistically analyzed separately. On the one hand,it mainly describes the names of people in Xuanzang’s translations and works from the aspects of translation form, character correspondence, and pronunciation, and summarizes that the translation of personal names in Xuanzang’s translated works has the characteristics of"translation form tends to be full translation and paraphrasing","personal name form is inconsistent","translation words tend to be perfect","correct or follow the old personal name form";On the other hand, due to the uniqueness of the material in his work,a specific analysis of the meaning and connotation of the accompanying notes involved in the names of people in Xuanzang’s works shows that Xuanzang’s evaluation of the old translated form of personal names"讹也"was actually a judgment made at the synchronic level. In fact,it is the diversity of translation terms, the change of Chinese language and Chinese characters, and other factors that cause the complexity and variety of forms. Then, the names of Xuanzang’s translations are compared and examined, divided into internal comparisons and external comparisons. The internal comparison mainly compares the similarities and differences in the forms of the same personal name in different scriptures, and analyzes the changes in the three stages of "exploration-stability-maturity" in Xuanzang’s nineteen-year translation career. To explore the relationship between the change of personal name form and the change of translation location, translation time, and pen acceptance.External comparison compares the similarities and differences between Xuanzang and other translators in the translation of the same personal name from the perspective of the same scripture translation,so as to see that although Xuanzang tends to paraphrase in translation,he also follows the characteristics of personal names and does not deliberately change the translation form; The contrast of personal names at different times also reflects the characteristics of phonetic changes. Finally, some personal names are preliminarily examined and analyzed. Finally, the characteristics of the translation of personal names in Xuanzang’s translation are summarized as a whole, such as obvious tendency of translation methods, basic unification of phonetic characters, and innovation of translation methods, and the specific characteristics of names of personal names in Buddhist scriptures are summarized.Reflect on the shortcomings of the study of personal names translated by Xuanzang, and look forward to the future development of research on personal names in Buddhist scriptures.
