Translation Studies,written by Susan Bassnett,is a classic dealing with the basic issues of translation studies.The translator chooses content in the first chapter of the third edition as the material of the translation task,which includes seven basic issues:language culture,types of translation,decoding and recoding,problems of equivalence,loss and gain,untranslatability,science or ‘secondary activity'.According to Peter Newmark's classification of the text type,the text belongs to informational text,which has its set format.So the translator uses Peter Newmark's communicative translation and semantic translation under the textual functional theory and applies the method of communicative translation to be the main,supplemented by semantic translation as a theoretical guide to the translation practice report.Through the translation of this part,the translator has a profound understanding and harvest on the treatment of informative text by way of analysis of the typical cases taken from the translated text from the lexical,sentential,discoursal and cultural levels.
