The concept of core literacy in The English Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education(2022 edition),which includes language ability,learning ability,cultural awareness and thinking quality.Thinking quality refers to the personality characteristics of human thinking,which reflects the levels of students’ ability to recognize,analyze,compare,infer,and evaluate things,as well as create.Improving the quality of thinking helps students learn to identify problems,analyze them,and solve them,so that they can make correct judgments about things.Reading is the process of interaction between students’ thinking and language,and students can promote the development of their own thinking quality through reading.Therefore,teachers can consciously cultivate students’ thinking quality and enhance their core literacy in reading teaching.However,due to the influence of exam-oriented education,some junior high school English teachers only confine themselves to explaining the general meaning of the text and language points in reading teaching,and there is great confusion about how to implement thinking quality into reading teaching,and it is difficult to implement the teaching goal of cultivating students’ thinking quality in junior high school English classroom teaching.This study is based on Bloom’s taxonomy of educational objectives,and all students in the classes 3 and 4 in grade 7 of S middle school in Y city,H province,where the author’ s internship is located,are the subjects of the study.The experimental study of thinking quality development was conducted in the experimental class 4,while the test,questionnaire,and interview were used,with the aim of examining the following two questions:(1)How to develop thinking quality in junior high school English reading teaching activities?(2)How effective is the development of thinking quality in English reading teaching activities in junior high school?The research shows as follows:(1)The teaching activities that can effectively improve students’ logical thinking include: analyzing the meaning of titles,distinguishing the genre of articles,summarizing the main idea of articles and paragraphs,analyzing the structure of articles,designing mind maps,analyzing the quality of characters,etc.Teaching activities that can effectively improve students’ critical thinking include predicting text content,verifying pre-reading prediction,speculating implied meaning,trying to figure out the author’ s intention,emotion and attitude,group debate,and commenting on opinions.Teaching activities that can effectively improve students’ innovative thinking include brainstorming,rhetoric appreciation,writing after reading,poster design and so on.(2)After the teaching experiment of cultivating students’ thinking quality in English reading class,all three dimensions of students’ thinking quality in the experimental class have been improved.Among them,logical thinking has the largest improvement,followed by critical thinking,and finally innovative thinking.According to the results,some suggestions are put forward to cultivate the thinking quality in English reading teaching: English teachers should pay attention to the training of text structure and the analysis of text content in the process of reading teaching.In the process of reading teaching,we should excavate the theme and argument of the text,guide students to question and promote students to think deeply.Guide students to break through the mindset and encourage them to express their innovative ideas.The cultivation of thinking quality should focus on the three dimensions of thinking quality and create corresponding teaching activities to promote the all-round development of students’ thinking level. |
