The Construction Of 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics In News Headlines’ Linguistic Representations:An Analysis From Systemic-functional Linguistics

This thesis studies the news headlines of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games from the reports from the largest English media in China,China Daily,which aims to explore what strategies are employed in shaping the image of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games from the perspective of systemic functional linguistics.In other words,this study explores that what linguistic patterns are adopted to construct the Beijing2022 Winter Olympic Games as a remarkable and successful event.One of the main theories supporting this study is Systemic Functional Linguistics(SFL),which focuses on the ideational meaning and interpersonal meaning constructed by news headlines,and their combination to analyze the news headlines.In this thesis,687 news headlines from China Daily were selected and collected.The analysis of ideational meaning mainly focuses on TRANSITIVITY and PARTICIPANT TYPE of the clauses in which these news headlines are located,and finds out the dominant coupling pattern of [PARTICIPANT + PROCESS] in the news headlines.The analysis of interpersonal meaning focuses on labeling and classifying the attitudes that appear in news headlines,and finding the coupling pattern of[PARTICIPANT + ATTITUDE] that predominates in headlines.Finally,it discusses the important role of these language representation means in constructing the image of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.The results of transitivity analysis show that material process occupies the highest proportion in news headlines,followed by verbal process,relational process and mental process.Of the eight types of participants in the headlines,the one that comes up most was those who took part in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games,followed by the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games and the organizer.In the coupling of TRANSITIVITY and PARTICIPANT TYPE in the ideational meaning,[Participator +Material Process] is the dominant one.Among the attitudinal resources in news headlines,the category of judgment accounts for the highest proportion,followed by the category of affect and the last category,appreciation.Among the three categories,positive attitude dominates and negative evaluation rarely appears.In the coupling mode of ideational meaning and interpersonal meaning,the dominant one is[Participator + Positive Judgement].
