Transitive Representations Of China’s Image Self-Construction In Publicity-oriented Translation Of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics

The 24th Winter Olympic Games,also known as the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics,is the first winter Olympic Games to be held in China.Beijing has become the world’s first "dual Olympic city" to host both the Summer Olympic Games and Winter Olympic Games.Recently,the research on national image attracts wide attention in the academic community across the world.It is significant to study China’s national image self-construction in Beijing 2022 winter Olympic games.Under this background,transitivity analysis is implemented in this thesis to explore China’s image and its construction behind officially translated publicity materials for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.Through the transitivity system,the six processes of transitivity are used to analyze China’s national image self-construction.The distribution of six processes of the transitivity system is presented in the major findings.The ranking is material process（54%）,behavioral process（22%）,relational process（10%）,verbal process（10%）,mental process（2.5%）and existential process（1.5%）.Material process dominates the processes related to China’s image self-construction.In addition,the thesis summarizes three images related to China’s image self-construction:a promoter of green Beijing 2022 winter Olympic games,a guardian of safe Beijing 2022 winter Olympic games,and an advocator of inclusive Beijing 2022 winter Olympic games.Theoretically,the linguistics-driven approach in this research,specifically the transitivity system of ideational metafunction,would contribute to the studies of China’s national image self-construction and foster the theoretical significance of the transitivity system.Practically,this research builds a small corpus of publicity-oriented translation of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic games and implements transitivity system analysis to study China’s national image self-construction behind the language.
