| Ecological Discourse Analysis(hereafter EDA),which originated from Ecolinguistics in the late 1970 s,is a new method in the realm of discourse analysis.It is aimed at exploring the ecological meaning behind the language.Furthermore,transitivity system within Systemic Functional Linguistics can provide a complete theoretical basis for EDA.General Secretary Xi Jinping has delivered four hosting principles for Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics,which is to hold the Beijing 2022 in a green,inclusive,open and clean manner”.“Green Olympics”,topping the hosting principles,focuses on a series of green measures conducted by Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.Therefore,based on the ecosophy of diversity and harmony,interaction and coexistence,this thesis conducts EDA of Green Olympics-related news reports on Beijing2022 from the perspective of transitivity system.It aims to answer three research questions:(1)What is the distribution of transitivity components in the Green Olympics-related news reports on Beijing 2022?(2)What is the realization of transitivity components in the Green Olympics-related news reports on Beijing 2022?(3)What ecological thoughts are revealed in the Green Olympics-related news reports on Beijing 2022?With the help of UAM Corpus Tool 3.3x,this paper selects 45 Green Olympicsrelated news reports on Beijing 2022 in China Daily and focuses on the distribution and realization of three transitivity components through qualitative and quantitative methods,intending to explore the ecological thoughts reflected in Beijing 2022.The results of this research can be divided into the following three points:Firstly,in terms of the distribution of transitivity system,participants and processes account for a significant proportion in contrast to circumstances,indicating that processes and participants are the two core parts for the exploration of the ecological thoughts contained in the collected news reports.As regards processes,material process shares the highest frequency among the six process types.In terms of participants,material participants take up the largest proportion and social lifeless participants are higher than other ecological participants.As for circumstances,accompaniment and Location circumstances have the largest proportion in the functional and ecological realms respectively.Secondly,as for the realization of transitivity system,with regard to processes,material process details a series of green measures implemented by Beijing 2022;relational process conveys the mutual promotion between green development and economic growth;verbal process voices different attitudes toward the green development of Beijing 2022;mental process manifest China’s determination of building a community with a shared future for mankind;existential process is employed to represent green measures that exist in the Beijing 2022;behavioral process highlights the unconscious physiological activities of human and seldom occur in news reports.With respect to participants,ecological participants are predominantly realized by social lifeless participants involving venue construction,energy usage,green technology application and ecological conservation.In terms of circumstances,the circumstance elements largely complement the information about Beijing 2022 which is expressed as prepositional phrases and adverbs.Thirdly,as for the embedded ecological thoughts,the discourse analysis of ecological orientations benefits the exploration of ecological thoughts contained in news discourse.Based on the above analysis,three ecological thoughts can be summarized as the construction of sustainable development,mutual benefit and harmonious coexistence.Therefore,this research is significant in theory and practice.This research provides a new ecological perspective for the application of the ecological discourse analysis model in the research field of sports news discourses,thus enriching related studies on EDA.Furthermore,this research can cultivate readers’ ecological consciousness in reading news discourses to build a deeper ecological civilization. |
