As a teaching form widely used in language teaching,questioning plays an important role in promoting learners’ language acquisition.Classroom questioning plays a more important role in promoting reading instruction.It can stimulate students’ reading interests,help students understand the reading text and improve their thinking level.Therefore,it is of great significance to investigate the application of classroom questioning in junior high school English reading teaching.This study adopts qualitative and quantitative methods to find out the problems and put forward suggestions.Classroom observation,questionnaire and interview are used to analyze the classroom questioning in English reading teaching of the junior high school.And the research questions are as follows:1.What are traits of questioning in junior high school English reading classroom presently?2.What are students’ expectations for questions in junior high school English reading classroom?In order to investigate the first question,ten English teachers of a school in Nanchang,Jiangxi Province are asked to do a questionnaire,then three of whose reading classes are chosen randomly to be observed and recorded as well as these three teachers are interviewed.In order to investigate the second question,the author also adopts the way of questionnaire for students in classes taught by these three teachers to understand students’ expectations of classroom questioning.The research finds that the traits of questioning in junior high school English reading class are as follows: The types of questions focus on displayed questions;The subject of questions is mostly teachers;The questioning strategies mainly are prompt and explanation;The waiting time for the students to answer questions is insufficient;The distribution of students who answer questions focuses on nominating ways;The feedback is based on simple approval.2.Students’ expectations for questions in junior high school English reading classroom are as follows: Students expect more referential questions;Students expect to have the opportunity to ask questions;In terms of questioning strategies,students expect prompt and explanation;Students expect to have more than 10 seconds to answer questions;Students expect teachers to use more volunteering ways;Students expect teachers to do specific comments.In view of situation,relevant suggestions are put forward for teachers,including:Optimize the question design and enrich types of questions;Induce and encourage students to ask questions;Adopt a variety of questioning strategies,focusing on inspiration and induction;Pay attention to students’ waiting state and set up waiting time reasonably;Use comprehensively various ways to ask for questions;Provide more guidance when give students feedback to improve the effectiveness of feedback.The following suggestions are made for junior high school students: Pay attention to the importance of classroom questioning in developing and improving English ability;Actively participate in the class,take the initiative to think and ask questions and develop high-level thinking ability.
