According to the search results on CNKI,there are relatively fewer translation study about academic monograph texts compared with literary texts and applied texts.Since its introduction into China, the Functional Equivalence theory proposed by American translator Eugene Nida has been applied by numerous domestic translators in guiding translation practice, but there are relatively fewer cases of utilizing this set of theory to guide the translation of academic monographs. This report will explore the application of Functional Equivalence theory to guide translating academic monographs on religious and historical topics in E-C translation practice. This report is a translation practice report for E-C translation. The selected text is excerpted from the British academic monograph Weeping Britannia written by the British historian Thomas Dixon. The excerpted text totals about 12,000 words.Nida’s Functional Equivalence theory was applied as the guide of this translation project. This report will analyze in detail the application of Functional Equivalence theory in the translation process from four main perspectives: lexical equivalence, syntactic equivalence, textual equivalence, and stylistic equivalence.Lexical equivalence will focus on analysis of translating proper nouns, terms and polysemy.Syntactic equivalence will take the translation of passive sentences and long and complex sentences as the study object.Textual equivalence will analyze the text form the perspectives of cohesion and coherence.Stylistic equivalence will mainly analyze the styles of academic text. This translation practice is an attempt by the translator to apply the theory of Functional Equivalence in translating academic monograph text. The translator hopes to provide some references for the domestic relevant translation studies of Functional Equivalence Theory, and to promote academic and cultural exchanges.
