A doctoral dissertation Xiu Shan Tujia Family Studies written by PhD Feng Min who has graduated from School of Ethnology and Sociology Minzu University of China, majoring in anthropology. Based on anthropology, this doctoral dissertation has exceeded a total quantity of 150,000 Chinese characters and has been published. This translation report has been written on the basis of the translating of the three sections of Chapter V of “Formation, Continuity and Separation of Family” in this doctoral dissertation. This source text describes the formation of family through the acquaintance process, the love process and the marriage process of the Tujia young people in Xiushan in chronological order. This dissertation has applied the research methodologies of the questionnaire survey and the literature survey for keeping the strong local features and academic features that the investigated region has, to some extent.On the basis of the functionalism’s Skopos theory, translation strategies such as literal translation and free translation have been applied to this translation activity, which has planned to transfer the culture and the custom of the investigated region of the source text to the target readers. This translation report has described this translation activity in several parts as follows:The first chapter has mainly made a brief introduction, including the project background, the project significance and the translation preparation;The second chapter has mainly described the translation activity, including theoretical basis, textual analysis and translation strategy;The third chapter has made a study on some translation cases, including the study of quotes, the study of phrases and sentences with local features and the study of proverbs;The last chapter has made a general conclusion about this translation activity, including the experience and the reflection and the contributions and the limits.
