The translation material of this report is excerpted from A Bitter Revolution written by Rana Miter.This book mainly introduces a series of incidents about foreign invasion and civil unrest together with the efforts that patriotic young men,intellectuals,writers,journalists and so on strove for China’s future.The translation practice not only helps the translator gain an in-depth understanding of the information text,communicative translation theory and various translation methods and skills,but also helps the readers reconnect the history of the War of Resistance Against Japan and know the standpoint of the western scholar about this war.According to Peter Newmark’s text type theory,the book has the characteristics of informative text.Based on the consideration,Newmark’s communicative translation theory is applied in the process of translation.The translator reorganizes the language structure to try to ensure the readability of the target text and express the information of the source text fully.In the source text,there are numerous proper nouns and long sentences with special historical background and characteristics.Therefore,the translator is required to acquire relevant background knowledge by reading related books.Meanwhile,considering that the readers are Chinese,the translator uses various translation skills to make the translation concise and smooth.In terms of lexical level,the translator creates glossaries and adopts annotation and conversion flexibly to convey the information accurately.At the syntactic level,based on the differences in expression habits between English and Chinese,the translator adopts change of voice,dividing and other translation skills to make the translation more aligned with the reading habit of the readers.At the same time,the translator lists corresponding examples and detailed explanation.
