The book,The Disordered Mind: What Unusual Brains Tell Us About Ourselves, explains how the inner workings of the brain associate with the motivation for human behavior, and how the processes of the brain become disordered, resulting in devastating diseases, such as autism, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and so on.By studying these disrupted areas of the brain,it can not only increase our understanding of the working processes of the brains, but also bring new inspiration to researchers in this field, thus providing new possibilities for the treatment of mental disordered patients. The translated material is selected from the second chapter of this book, which describes what is autism, what contributes to this disease,as well as the researches and progresses to this disease in the past years.Guided by the communicative translation theory of Peter Newmark, the translator applied some translation techniques such as conversion, division, amplification, omission and so on,combining literal translation with free translation to complete the translation of the second chapter. The translator gained the experience of translating long and difficult sentences and terminologies from this translation practice, and provided Chinese version of the ST for the public while enhancing their understanding of autism. The source text is a highly professional informative text, which involves a lot of terminologies concerning cognitive psychology and brain science as well as long and difficult sentences, plus the limited background knowledge reserve in this field, the translator encountered some difficulties understanding the text at the first place. After that, the translator searched authoritative materials online to learn some background knowledge and the meaning of the context, and applied such translation techniques as conversion and division to enable the translation faithful, smooth, and natural. The translation report contains five parts: Part one is the introduction of the translation project, including the background, significance, objectives and structure of the project.Part two introduces the background of the original text, including the author, the main content, and linguistic features of the ST.Part three introduces the translation theoryas well as its application in the translation process.Part four is the translation difficulties and solutions, containing the adoption of some translation techniques.Part five is the conclusion of the translation project, the inspiration and unsolved problems.
