A Report On The E-C Translation Of Translation,Linguistics,Culture—a French–English Handbook (Excerpt) Guided By Text Type Theory And Skopos Theory

The report is based on an English-Chinese translation practice of the fifth chapter of the book Translation,Linguistics,Culture: A French English Handbook.This book mainly discusses the problems in the French-English translation from the perspectives culture and linguistics.Chapter Five of the book revolves around these problems on the syntactic level,and the author of the report has conducted the translation task with the help of Peter Newmark’s Text Type Theory and Skopos Theory.According to the text type theory,the source text is a mixture of texts of expressive,vocative and informative functions.Another important feature of the source text is the wide use of the first-person plural pronouns as subjects,which makes the relationships between sentences rather obscure.Thus,under the guidance of the Skopos Theory,the original persona of readers is revised and a translation brief is drawn up based on the revised persona of readers.As a result,the first-person plural pronouns in the source text are replaced with appropriate nouns or phrases,and long and difficult sentences and sentences with fuzzy logical relations are split and rearranged.To reduce the heterogeneity of the source text,Chinese idioms and allusions are also used in the translation.The translation practice showcases that the power of the translator is exercised prudently in order to produce a target text of high quality and readability.
