A Report On C-E Translation Of Commentary In Henan Museum

As one of the platforms for spreading Chinese culture,the museum should also pay attention to its foreign language services.However,the translator visited Henan Museum many times and found that there is no complete English cultural relics commentary,which greatly weakened the museum’s foreign language services function.Although the previous researches on Henan Museum have been involved,the research on the basic exhibitions in Henan Museum,which was reopened to the public on September 24,2020,has not been involved.Therefore,the translator excerpted the commentary of the first three exhibitions in the basic exhibition “A great civilization rises with capitals established in the central plain” as the translated text.In the translation process,the translator found that the original text covered a large number of culture-loaded words,which was also the biggest difficulty encountered by the translator in the translation process.According to Nida’s classification in the cultural factors in translation,the translator classified the culture-loaded words involved in the commentary into four categories,namely,ecological culture-loaded words,material culture-loaded words,social culture-loaded words,and language culture-loaded words.And the translation methods and techniques suited for various culture-loaded words are flexibly used under the three principles.The Skopos Theory holds that the purpose of translation determines the means of translation.Therefore,the translator adopted “transliteration plus explanatory text,transliteration plus free translation of common names,free translation,omission,paraphrase” under the principle of skopos;adopted “paraphrase,addition,transliteration plus annotation,addition,transliteration plus free translation under the principle of coherence;adopted “literal translation,literal translation plus free translation” under the principle of fidelity.It is proved that the three principles of the Skopos Theory have a strong guiding role in the translation of culture-loaded words,which can help translators solve the difficulties encountered in translation practice.This translation practice promotes the research on the translation theory in the museum commentary,and provides a reference for the translation methods and techniques of the culture-loaded words in the current museum commentary.In addition,this translation practice analyzes the key and difficult points in the translation process and puts forward the solutions to verify that Skopos Theory has a strong guiding effect on this kind of text,and promotes the combination of Skopos Theory and translation practice.
