Reproduction Of The Vocative Function In The Translation Of Popular Science Texts

The original materials were extracted from Eat Like a Human,chapters 6 and 8.The author traveled around the world and ingeniously showcased a plethora of traditional cuisines and cultures through travelogues.At the end of each chapter,recipes are offered for easy home preparation,with the goal of encouraging healthy,nutritious,and sustainable traditional dietary practices.The text is classified as a non-literary work of popular science since it combines objective scientific knowledge about food with the literary elements of a travelogue.The overarching goal of the text is to appeal for natural and healthful traditional dietary approaches.This translation practice report focuses on three means of realising the function of calling: didactic,guided and logical vocative of translation,with the intention of fulfilling the mission of the operative text by means of the translation techniques proposed by the translation variation theory.Didactic evocations are mainly based on two strategies,the conversion and addition of modal verbs.The quantitative values of modal verbs in the English and Chinese languages are not equivalent.To actualize the adaptive translation of the translation,it is required to take into account the demands of both the original author and the readers in the specific translation.The inductive feature is mainly achieved by rhetorical methods.Rhetoric emphasizes expressive tactics in order to persuade.To replicate the original text’s strong persuasive characteristics,the translator,with the help of variation techniques like supplement,adaption and remolding,resorted to variant rhetorical tactics,namely simile,rhetorical questions,and parallels.Logical vocative translation is concerned with the successful translation of logically consistent thinking.Because of the differences in logical thinking patterns between English and Chinese cultures,the readability of the translation can only be enhanced by translating according to the reading habits of the target readers.It is thus only via comprehension that the text may proceed to instruct the readers and therefore achieve its own calling role.Therefore,the logical appealing proceeds mainly from the two aspects of discourse cohesion and coherence and paragraph order adjustment.Variation translation techniques were frequently employed within this translation practice,with the goal of reproducing the vocative function of operative science publications.
