The contemporary social trend of young people "lying down before they grow old" and "leaving the workplace" is a hot topic.This negative trend is reflected in workplace situations as work withdrawal behaviour,it is urgent to reaserch what causes work withdrawal behaviour.Illegitimate with tasks as a stressor may trigger negative psychological and behavioural avoidance,and in conjunction with Affective Event Theory,negative emotions are likely to act as a bridge in the causal chain between illegitimate tasks and WWB.How to keep employees working with a good atitude and positively motivation at work? the Doctrine of mean as a spontaneous psychological mechanism with Chinese characteristics,has shown strong vitality in stress coping and emotion regulation.Based on the above background,this study attempts to explore the effect of illegitimate tasks on employees’ work withdrawal behaviour,while examining negative emotions as a mediating variable and the Doctrine of mean as a moderating variable.The Chinese Version of Illegitimate Task Scale,Work Emotion Scale,Work Withdrawal Behavior Scale and Zhongyong Belief/Value Scale were selected for data collection from working employees in selected universities and Internet industries.The empirical analysis and model validation of the 635 valid cases obtained led to the following conclusions.(1)Overall scores on illegitimate tasks are low,with significant differences in the level of personnel transparency;overall scores on negative emotions are low,with significant differences in the level of physical health,marital status,frequency of overtime work,rank,income level and personnel transparency;scores on work withdrawal behaviour are low,with significant differences in marital status,rank and personnel transparency;scores on zhongyong-thinking are high,with significant differences in marital status,rank and personnel transparency.(2)Significant correlations between illegitimate tasks,negative emotions,Zhongyong belief,and employee work withdrawal behaviour: illegitimate tasks were significantly positively correlated with negative emotions and job withdrawal behaviour,illegitimate tasks were significantly negatively correlated with the Doctrine of mean,and the Doctrine of mean was significantly negatively correlated with negative emotions and work withdrawal behaviour.(3)Illegitimate tasks significantly and positively affect employees’ work withdrawal behaviour and negative emotions,negative emotions significantly and positively affect employees’ work withdrawal behaviour,and zhongyong-thinking positively affects negative emotions and work withdrawal behaviour.(4)Negative emotions partially mediated the relationship between illegitimate tasks and employees’ work withdrawal behaviour,and the Doctrine of mean negatively moderated the relationship between negative emotions and work withdrawal behaviour as well as the overall mediating effect.Finally,based on the Research conclusions,this study proposes targeted management recommendations and clarifies research limitations and outlook.
