Rudolph Arnheim is an American psychologist and aesthetician.His aesthetic theory is often mentioned in contemporary aesthetic research and artistic creation,and is often regarded as the representative of perceptual aesthetics.Most of them have made little positive contribution to the domestic research on its innovation and effectiveness.The main research goal of this paper is to explore the formation process of Arnheim’s visual perception aesthetic theory from the history of the combination of psychology and aesthetics,and analyze the causes and results of Arnheim’s visual perception theory deviation according to certain aesthetic preconceptions,so as to point out the validity scope of his theory.This paper mainly adopts the methods of literature research,comparative analysis and multidisciplinary comprehensive research.By sorting out the history of the combination of aesthetics and psychology,this paper combs the main achievements and defects in the process of discipline combination,and analyzes Arnheim’s aesthetic theory on this basis.Firstly,based on the time node of great changes in psychology and aesthetics,this paper combs the history of the combination and development of psychology and aesthetics,analyzes how Arnheim’s theory inherits and develops psychology and aesthetics,and what improvements have been made on the basis of traditional European aesthetics.Then it analyzes the problems existing in Arnheim’s theory from three aspects: aesthetic perception,aesthetic object and aesthetic value:analyze the concept of aesthetic perception,analyze Arnheim’s deviation in understanding aesthetic perception,and directly equate general perception with aesthetic perception;This paper analyzes Arnheim’s over simplification of the aesthetic object in the process of how to grasp the aesthetic object of perception,and analyzes Arnheim’s deviation in the understanding of form and sense of life with reference to Kant’s formalist aesthetics and Susan Langer’s emotional aesthetics;Combing the core of aesthetic value,and by comparing Arnheim’s understanding of aesthetic value with the differences between traditional European aesthetics,this paper intuitively shows the shortcomings of Arnheim’s theory in revealing aesthetic value.Arnheim inherited and improved the perceptual field theory and Isomorphism of Gestalt psychology,put forward the concept of perceptual power,applied it to the appreciation of art,and put forward a possibility on how the subjective emotion corresponds to the objective form.However,Arnheim’s theory has a certain scope of application,which can only be used to interpret some abstract formal art.The power of visual perception only involves the perception stage in aesthetic activities,and can not explain deeper spiritual activities.He has a certain deviation in his understanding of aesthetic links,and only pays attention to the perceptual activities in aesthetic activities;His understanding of aesthetic perception also has some deviation,and he believes that there is no difference between general perception and aesthetic perception;He also ignored the acquisition of self confirmation in aesthetic value and the sublimation of aesthetic emotion.Aesthetic research is not equal to perceptual research.It is necessary to delimit the effective scope of perceptual theory,so as to truly reveal the utility value of aesthetic psychology.
