With the development of society and the progress of art, more and more people are interested in works of art, whether for appreciation or collection purposes, they will often go between major art galleries and museums because they cannot rely on them. They already have visual experience to appreciate the artist’s work,so even though they have a large amount of information about the art work, they still can ’ t appreciate the true meaning of the art work. That’s because they were born asleep using their eyes to know the power of works of art,so they have to find ways to wake up these sleeping abilities. And those modern art that is innovative,self-expression,and provocative are usually incomprehensible and seem to be far away. However, the whims and sharp criticisms of modern art are also its most attractive features,so how to use more scientific theories to interpret works of art is the subject of discussion in this article. What this article is going to study is to explore the ability of visual perception in an all-round way to restore its original function,so as to better guide the vision to appreciate the works of art.At the same time, visual perception advocates the establishment of a perception-oriented knowledge relationship with artistic works, which is also the relationship between aesthetics, emotions or expression. It emphasizes that artistic works can bring us thinking and experience, and regard it as entering the artist’s heart and exerting our sensibility or the way to explore our perception and emotional abilities. This article attempts to use Rudolf Arnheim’s theory of visual perception to interpret the inner meaning of works of art, using Gestalt Psychology as the theoretical fulcrum to elaborate. At the same time, with the great wealth of art works, people are paying more and more attention to the use of scientific and rational knowledge to analyze and compare works of art,and Arnheim as a leader in modern art psychology, undoubtedly provides us with solid science Theory to guide works of art. This article takes the works of three artists,Henri Matisse,Pablo Picasso and Piet Cornelies Mondrian as examples to further analyze the mysteries under the theory of visual perception. The main reason for choosing the art works of these three artists as the case analysis is that Arnheim’s theory of visual perception only gradually matured in the 1950 s and 1960 s.He mainly discussed works of art in the field of modern art.As the innovators of twentieth century art, these three artists reflect the unprecedented courage of this era.Matisse is a representative of Fauvism,Picasso is a representative of Cubism, and Mondrian is a representative of geometric abstraction. They are both pioneers of this era and have reached a certain consensus with Arnheim’s visual perception theory.Based on the characteristics of the works of the three artists, this article conducts an in-depth analysis of the works of the three artists from the three major aspects of visual perception theory: color, form, and simplification.Explore more possibilities of visual perception in the visual language of artistic works, try to explore new ideas of visual perception in artistic creation, and enrich people’s previous visual experience of artistic works.
