| This is a report based on the translation of Chapter One to Seven of Pest Control,a comic thriller best seller in the United States.In the novel,a normal worker whose dream was to revolutionize the way of pest control got mistaken as a professional killer and experienced a series of suspenseful and sarcastic events.Pest Control is an excellent work which introduces a great deal of foreign life.Moreover,it would help build a public awareness to find a green pest control method.The CEA(Comprehension,Expression,and Adaptation)framework presented by Professor Li Chuangshuan was employed to analyze cases in this paper.According to Professor Li,translation is the process of comprehension,expression,and adaptation.He believes that the translator’s understanding of the original text should be close to,as thorough as,or even better than that of the author.The target text should be expressed the way the author clearly states,wants to state,or hopes to state.And proper adjustments should be made to better achieve the project objective,therefore,the target text and the source text could be presented in the same,similar,or totally different ways.The translation report is comprised of five chapters.The first chapter is an introduction to the source text and the author.The second chapter describes the process of translation.The third chapter is a brief introduction of the CEA framework,including statements of each part from related theories.The fourth chapter is case analysis.The corresponding conclusions are drawn and some specific translation strategies are also put forward in this part: Firstly,comprehension could be reached through studying the professional expertise and the background information,and examining the logic implication.Secondly,in terms of expression,the translator should use precise words and right collocations,maintain coherence,and avoid Euro-Chinese,and the tone of voice should be consistent with that of the source text.Lastly,in adaptation,to achieve the same effect as the source text,the translator could employ omission,supplement,and conversion if complete equivalence of the source text would pose barriers to achieve the purpose of the translation project.And the last chapter is conclusion which summarizes the translator’s whole translation practice. |
