| In recent years,with the continuous development of science and technology,people’s demand for scientific knowledge is also constantly increasing,and popular science books are the best medium to help people understand and apply scientific knowledge.In addition,reading ecological popular science books is the best way for people to enter the world of animals.Therefore,this report chooses Cat Wisdom: 60 Great Lessons You Can Learn from a Cat as a translation practice source text to explore the translation methods of ecological popular science texts while understanding the habits of animals.Cat Wisdom: 60 Great Lessons You Can Learn from a Cat is a typical popular science book,which mainly describes 60 characteristics of cats and some qualities that humans can learn from them.The text analysis reveals that the linguistic structure of this text is rich and diverse,which is mainly reflected in the existence of long and short sentences,and the extensive use of subordinate compound sentences and passive sentences;in the process of translation,lexical as well as sentence-level conversion is required.Therefore,under the guidance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory,this report analyses the equivalence of the translation at three levels: lexical level,syntactic level and textual level,focuses on the difficulties of translating ecological popular science texts and discusses the corresponding translation methods and techniques to ensure that the translation is faithful to the source text and conforms to the expression habits of Chinese.In order to ensure the maximum equivalence between the target text and the source text and to enhance the readability of the translation,in the process of translating Cat Wisdom: 60 Great Lessons You Can Learn from a Cat,conversion of word classes and addition and extension of words meaning are used to achieve equivalence at the lexical level;flexible handling of passive structures and sequential translation and division of compound sentences are required to achieve equivalence at the syntactic level.Besides,addition and conversion of pronouns and addition of conjunctions are used to achieve equivalence at the textual level.Accordingly,it is proved that the Theory of Functional Equivalence has a great guiding function on the translation of ecological popular science texts. |
