This is a report on translation practice guided by Chesterman’s theory of translation norms. The source text is excerpted from The Dragon Prince, published in March 2020,and the translator selects chapters 19-25 as this translation practice. The text tells that the humans use black magic to kill the dragon king and destroy the only dragon egg, which brings about the war. However, the two human princes and the elves who come to assassinate them accidentally find that the egg is not destroyed, they decide to return the egg to the dragon queen, ending the war and restoring peace. The source text is one of excellent children’s literature works, which is vivid and interesting. It is verified that there is no Chinese version of the source text. The source text, one of children’s literature works, has the characteristics of childlikeness, readability and literariness.Children’s literature often uses reduplicative words and onomatopoeia to make the text childlike;in terms of grammatical structure, children’s literature has simple sentences and clear structure to enhance the readability of the text;children’s literature must follow the rules of literary creation.Chesterman divides translation norms into expectancy norms and professional norms, among which, professional norms include accountability norms, communication norms, and relation norms. The translators explore the application of translation norms to children’s literature from three aspects: at the grammatical level, the translators use literal translation, unit shift, sentence structure change and other translation methods to make the translated text simple and clear in structure,so as to realize the readability of the text;at the semantic level, the translators use synonym, paraphrase, abstract change and other translation methods to express explicit meaning, which intrigues children’s interest;at the pragmatic level, the translator adopts cultural filtering, explicitness change and other translation methods to match the style of the original text, which reflect the literariness of the text. The translator perceives the charm of children’s literature in translation practice and provides an intensive analysis of the translation methods and translation strategies of children’s literature, providing valuable experience for future text translation of children’s literature.
