A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Dragon Prince（chapters 1-5）

This practice report,guided by Skopos theory,selects some chapters of The Dragon Prince,a children’s literary work,as my translation object.I will explore translation methods and strategies of children’s literary works from this practice,hoping to provide some references to the later translation of children’s literature.This translation practice report selects a popular children’s fantasy novel The Dragon Prince as the source text.The book consists of 35 chapters.I pick chapters 1-5 out of them,with 13,000 words in total.A careful survey can ensure that this is the first translation.As it is translated for children,translators should consider the psychological characteristics,Children’s receptivity and their reading interest.The skopo of translating children’s literature works is to show the text interesting,adapt to children’s receptivity and meet children’s reading interest.What’s more,the coherence and faithfulness in Skopos theory are to show the readability of the target text and ensure the coherence,fluency and clarity of the target text.Finally,it ensures that the target text can faithfully reproduce the style of the source text.The translator digs the text interesting through the selection of specific words,such as the use of reduplication,onomatopoeia and tetragram to attract the interest of children readers.In terms of readability,the translator shortens the long sentences,reorganizes the sentence structure,and omits or supplements some unintelligible sentences to make sentences more concise and fluent.Moreover,the translator takes domesticating strategy to rewrite the sentences with the specific cultural context in order to ensure the readability of the text.Finally,the translator tries to faithfully reproduce the style of the source text through textual cohesion,textual coherence and some rhetorical devices.The translation practice makes me enjoy the children’s literature translation and accumulates translation experience,which can provide me with some translation methods for future children’s literature translation.
