A Study Of Discourse Maker "Good Heavens"

Discourse markers are one of the hot topics in the field of linguistics.This paper focuses on the frequent occurrence of this linguistic phenomenon in spoken language.The use of discourse markers enriches verbal expression and improves the efficiency of verbal communication.Therefore,the study of discourse markers has important theoretical value and practical significance.At present,the academic community has made quite rich research results in both the overall research and the case study of discourse markers.On the basis of the previous research results,this paper takes the discourse marker "Good Heavens" as the research object.We find that the current research on "Good Heavens" mainly focuses on interjection,identification of discourse markers and pragmatic functions.After inspection,we believe that the research perspective of discourse marker "Good Heavens" needs to be explored and explained further.Therefore,on the basis of previous studies,this paper analyzes the discourse marker "Good Heavens" from its evolution process,formation mechanism,identity determination,co-occurrence components,semantic characteristics,distribution characteristics and pragmatic functions.This paper is divided into the following chapters:Chapter one: The introduction part mainly explains the reason and significance of the topic,the research status of discourse markers at home and abroad,and the research status of "Good Heavens ",the research methods of this article,and the source of corpus,which is the basis for subsequent chapters.Chapter two: Combining with previous scholars’ definitions of discourse markers,we judge the " Good Heavens" as a discourse marker from the aspects of pronunciation,semantics,syntax,position distribution,function and style,etc.Discourse markers are one of the means of discourse cohesion and coherence,as well as the speaker’s emotional expression.When the discourse marker "Good Heavens" performs its pragmatic function,it usually accomplishes this function together with the co-occurrence component,which includes:interjections,modal particles,conjunctions,adverbs,and demonstrative pronouns "so".Chapter three: This part describes and analyzes the distribution and semantic characteristics of the discourse marker "Good Heavens".The distribution characteristics of discourse marker "Good Heavens" include three aspects: sentence type distribution,style distribution and position distribution.Through the description of these three aspects,we try to explain the distribution characteristics of discourse marker "Good Heavens" more clearly;In addition,we analyze it in specific speech communication,and summarize its semantic characteristics as: beyond expectations,subjective evaluation,and emotional orientation.Chapter four: In this part,we analyze the pragmatic function of the discourse marker "Good Heavens".We use Halliday’s linguistic function theory to discuss it from two aspects:textual function and interpersonal function.The discourse function of the discourse marker "Good Heavens" is mainly reflected in the turn aspect.The discourse marker "Good Heavens" is a turn opening marker,turn-taking marker and turn occupying marker.The interpersonal function of the discourse marker "Good Heavens" is manifested in emotional expression,information prominence,emphasis and face maintenance.Chapter five: This part combs the evolution process of the discourse marker "Good Heavens".It has gone through the development process from a partial phrase,an interjection to a discourse marker.In this process,the subjective evaluation meaning of "Good" gradually highlights,and the lexical meaning of "Heavens" is completely empty.The two closely combine to realize interjection,and develop into a discourse marker in frequent colloquial communication.In the process of the formation of discourse marker "Good Heavens",the mechanism of its formation is reanalysis,subjectivism and interactive subjectivism,and semantic appropriateness.Chapter five: This part is conclusion,which summarizes the contents of the full text,and points out the innovation and shortcomings of this study.
