English course is a compulsory basic course for students of all majors in secondary vocational school,which has both instrumental and humanistic characteristics.The task of English course is to stimulate students’ interest in English learning,help them further learn basic language knowledge,improve listening,speaking,reading,writing and other language skills,develop students’ English subject core competencies including language communication in workplace,perception of thinking differences,cross-cultural understanding and autonomous learning,and cultivate high-quality workers and technical talents with all-round development of morality,intelligence,physique,beauty and labor.With core competencies as the goal,this paper conducts action research in English teaching of secondary vocational school by using unit overall teaching model,aiming to explore the following three questions:(1)What is the situation of the cultivation of secondary vocational students’ English subject core competencies and what are the specific problems?(2)How to formulate and implement the action research on unit overall teaching model of secondary vocational English with the goal of cultivating subject core competencies?(3)How to analyze and evaluate the effect of unit overall teaching model oriented by English subject core competencies on secondary vocational students?This paper carries out action research on the cultivation of English subject core competencies of secondary vocational students from the perspective of teaching model after conducting teaching observation,teachers interview and student questionnaires survey and other preliminary investigation and literature review.The action research takes senior one students majoring in tour guide from Jiulongpo Vocational Education Center of Chongqing as object and carries out the teaching practice of one-semester and four-stage unit overall teaching model pointing to English subject core competencies of secondary vocational school.Meanwhile,the research adopts students’ questionnaires,teachers’ teaching journals,peer teachers’ observation and evaluation records and SPSS statistical analysis software to collect and analyze the data.Under the guidance of curriculum standard and “big idea” of the unit,taking the students as the center of teaching,the research focuses on specific themes,reconstructs the unit teaching contents and sets subject core competencies objectives.The research integrates professional knowledge of tour guides,creates real situation that integrates students’ real life,major or future career,and designs unit situational task in the basis of students’ cognition and learning characteristics.Based on the view of English learning activities,the research focuses on the whole teaching process of before-class,in-class and after-class,and designs stepwise learning activities of comprehension,application and innovation.It also pays attention to teaching effect and carries out academic level evaluation based on teaching objectives,combining performance assessment with formative assessment.The action research finds that the unit overall teaching model pointing to English subject core competencies of secondary vocational school can effectively solve the problems of students’ difficulties in forming knowledge system and training deep inquiry thinking and the weakness of transferring and applying.Unit overall teaching design helps students build knowledge structure system.Unit situational task guides students to elevate professionalism,solve practical problems,realize knowledge transfer and innovation,and put what they have learned into practice.The teaching activities of whole process and the stepped activities based on the view of English learning activities encourage students to actively explore unit theme and think deeply.The comparison of the results of pre-test and post-test shows that this action research can improve the students’ workplace language communication ability,thinking difference perception ability,cross-cultural understanding ability and autonomous learning ability.The English subject core competencies of secondary vocational students have been effectively implemented,which lays a solid foundation for students’ future career,continuous learning and lifelong development. |
