| From the second half of the twentieth century to the first half of the twenty-first century,Yu Xiaofu was a unique and expressive Chinese artist who maintained his place in the art of painting. The humanistic orientation and sense of historical mission of his paintings underpinned his entire artistic path, naturally giving his works a strong dramatic quality. The historical subjects of his large-scale “drama” scenes are boldly historically engaged, while the historical subjects of his “light comedies” are characterised by the carnival of old Shanghai.Overall, whether it is a “drama”or “a light comedy”,Yu Xiaofu’s paintings reflect his sense of mission as a literary artist and the spirit of the old Shanghainese.Through the study of Yu Xiaofu’s paintings, the author explores the path of localisation of contemporary painting.Although many Chinese scholars have begun to study the uniqueness of Yu Xiaofu’s artistic style and his techniques,no one has yet addressed the phenomenon of ’dramatic’ image construction in his paintings. In this paper, the author will attempt to explore how dramatic works influence the viewer’s thinking and systematically analyse the dramatic staging construction in Yu Xiaofu’s works based on relevant literature such as Yu Xiaofu’s anthologies, interviews, creative philosophy, characteristics of his artistic style and creative experience,as well as analyses of the interaction between theatre and painting by scholars at home and abroad. The first chapter presents an explanation and definition of dramatic’ expression in painting and explores the positive connotations of dramatic sketches in the paintings and drawings of contemporary artist Yu Xiaofu;the second chapter briefly describes the reasons for the formation of Yu Xiaofu’s style;the third chapter focuses on the dramatic elements in his works and their ideological connotations,as well as the style of his paintings.Chapter 3 focuses on the dramatic elements in his work, their ideological connotations and pictorial style,as well as his compositional techniques to emphasise his personal style through the incorporation of dramatic art forms;Chapter 4analyses the dramatic elements in Yu Xiaofu’s work and how he cleverly combined them in his work and developed a new artistic style. |
