Although women were discriminated against in the social and political life of ancient Rome, they still played a role that could not be ignored. After entering the Roman Empire, aristocratic women, especially royal women, had a remarkable influence on political life.Based on the records of classical writers and the scientific research achievements of scholars at home and abroad since modern times, this paper tries to clarify the political participation of royal women in Julia-Claudia,the first imperial dynasty, and on this basis, analyzes the reasons why they played a role in imperial politics and their influence. Then, from the perspective of gender history. From one side,it presents the multifaceted characteristics of the politics of the principate. In addition to the introduction of the significance of the topic, research status at home and abroad, research methods and innovations, this paper is mainly divided into three parts.Taking Livia,Mesarina and Agrippina as typical examples of political participation, this paper focuses on the background and performance of royal women’s political participation, and evaluates such participation. In the first chapter, the paper discusses the background of royal women’s political participation from three aspects: the background of The Times, the background of class and the background of education.Among them,in the context of The Times, the improvement of royal women’s status in gender relations was examined from the perspectives of marriage system, family relations, economic production, changes in political structure and the popularization of education. The social hierarchy of ancient Rome was strict, and the royal women’s own class provided conditions for their political participation. In addition, because of their caste, royal women received a good education at an early age, which provided them with a basic knowledge background for later political participation.Secondly,in the second chapter, the article from the royal royal women’s political participation in the way and the specific performance of participation to the overall discussion of the royal royal women’s political participation performance. The royal women of Julia-Claudia dynasty participated in politics through religion as the only formal way,and through family, marriage, offspring and extramarital affairs as informal ways to achieve their political goals. After obtaining formal and informal channels of participation, royal women propagated politics, provided personal protection for their own political forces, and even intervened in specific government affairs for a time. Finally,in the third chapter, the article analyzes the royal women’s political participation from the essence of political participation and the influence of political participation. In terms of the nature of participation,it discusses the controversy and limitation of the nature of royal women’s political participation, and then analyzes the influence of royal women’s political participation from three aspects: the promotion of women’s status, the change of Roman political situation and the historical reference for women’s political participation in later generations. The conclusion reviews the article as a whole and objectively evaluates the political participation of royal women in Julia-Claudia dynasty. The article emphasized that although the political status of royal women had been improved, the promotion should not be exaggerated because ancient Rome was still a patriarchal country, and their intervention in politics was limited.Since the research object of this article only focused on women in the upper class, whether women in the lower class could participate in politics remains to be verified.
