Journey to the West is a classic Chinese novel of gods and demons,and is one of the four great works of Chinese literature.Author Wu Cheng’en created a popular mythical world based on the true historical story of Tang Dynasty monk Xuanzang’s journey to India to obtain Buddhist scriptures.Journey to the West incorporates the ideas and content of Confucianism,Taoism,and Buddhism,along with many folk stories and historical references.With the author’s rich literary skills,the book contains a wealth of cultural content,giving it an important place in the history of Chinese literature.This paper aims to explore the translation value and cultural dissemination of the character names in Journey to the West from a cross-cultural perspective.The article first summarizes the important characters in Journey to the West and analyzes their mistranslation,thus discussing the cultural impact of mistranslation on literary works.The study found that mistranslation not only involves translating a character’s name from one culture to another,but also allows literary works to benefit from cultural localization,providing a more direct reading experience to a wider audience without sacrificing too much original meaning.In conclusion,mistranslation is an effective tool for cross-cultural communication,and has important significance for the dissemination and reception of literary works.This thesis consists of an introduction,four chapters,and a conclusion:The introduction mainly introduces the research object,significance,purpose,method,current research,data sources,and an overview of character names.Chapter One mainly presents a statistical analysis of the character names in Journey to the West,and analyzes their classification,characteristics,and sources.Chapter Two mainly analyzes the translation of character names in the translated versions of Journey to the West.Firstly,the mistranslation of character names in Journey to the West is counted and analyzed.Then,based on the collected data,the main translation methods used for character names in Journey to the West are summarized,including transliteration,free translation,literaltranslation,and transliteration+literal translation.Further research is conducted on the use and characteristics of these different translation methods according to different classifications.Chapter Three mainly conducts research on the translation value of the names of characters in Journey to the West from a cross-cultural communication perspective.The discussion focuses on the cross-cultural communication value brought by the translation of the names of characters in Journey to the West in terms of language transmission value, literary translation value,and cultural inheritance and communication value. |
