A Report On Simulated Consecutive Interpreting Of The Press Conference For The 4th Session Of The 13th NPC On The Basis Of Attitude System

This report is based on the simulated consecutive interpreting of the press conference for the 4th session of the 13 th National People’s Congress on March,4th,2021.The author first takes its announcement and Q & A sessions as the source materials for simulated interpreting.Then,under the guidance of J.R.Martin’s attitude system in appraisal theory,by analyzing her attitudinal problems in the interpretation and later producing a second version with attitudinal equivalence,the author improves the quality of this simulated interpreting task.Attitude system consists of three sub-systems — affect,judgement,and appreciation.It is often used to analyze emotion,social judgement,and value at the lexical level,involving positive and negative resources.Based on the attitude system,this report dissects the loss of attitudinal resources and improper handling of negative attitude resources in the first interpreting,and then enhances the attitudinal equivalence in the second from the perspectives of affect,judgment,and appreciation by adopting certain interpreting techniques.Upon the analysis,it is concluded that the author majorly takes literal translation during the simulated interpreting due to the seriousness of the press conference.Word selection is the first skill the author draws on to demonstrate China’s positive stance if the attitudinal resources of equivalent positive words can be gained from the target language;addition is also used to project China’s attitude as a great power if there are no attitudinal resources of corresponding positive words in the target language.Meanwhile,if there are negative attitude resources in the source language(such as some questions from foreign journalists),then omission is applied to dilute their negative influence and promote the positive image of China.This report verifies the feasibility of improving interpreting quality through attitudinal analysis,which is of empirical significance to political news interpretation.By identifying attitudinal resources in the source language and adopting interpreting techniques such as word selection,addition,and omission,interpreters are able to achieve attitudinal equivalence between the source language and the target language to the greatest extent,through which the attitude and positive image of China are well presented.
