| This thesis takes the section from the Nanpu Bridge to the Yangpu Bridge on the east side of the Huangpu River from 1843-1918 as the research object. With theories and methods of historical geography, this thesis analyzes and studies the historical materials of local chronicles,Title Deeds, archives, and maps, discusses the temporal and spatial process and characteristics of the historical evolution of Pudong Riverside in different stages from 1843 to 1918,and then discusses the location of Pudong Riverside in Shanghai port and its impact. The entire thesis is divided into four parts. The first is to trace the formation and changes of Pudong Riverside before the opening of Shanghai, mainly from the perspectives of the natural and social geographical environment.Based on previous studies on the changes of Shanghai and the Huangpu River, combined with chronicles, maps, and other related documents, restore the Pudong Riverside’s historical evolution before the port’s opening.Based on this, this thesis discusses the characteristics and laws of historical and geographical changes during the period of focus. The second is to analyze and summarize the historical changes of Pudong Riverside from the opening of Shanghai in 1843 to the 1894 Treaty of Shimonoseki. This thesis mainly uses Shanghai Title Deeds and maps to explore the primary forms of the riverside coastline, the transfer of land property rights, and the temporal and spatial characteristics and changes of land use conditions to reflect the functional transformation of the Pudong Riverside and its status and role in Shanghai Port. The third is to restore and analyze the historical changes of the Pudong Riverside from the 1895 Treaty of Shimonoseki to the end of World War I in 1918.Similarly,using historical materials such as Shanghai Title Deeds and maps,we discovered new characteristics and their causes in the shape of the riverside shoreline, the transfer of land property rights, and land use.In contrast with the previous stage,it reflects the multi-dimensional changes of Pudong Riverside and its status in Shanghai Port. And by digging archives, the problems in the process of land development are summarized and analyzed. This mainly takes the archives of Pudong Levee Worker Rehabilitation Bureau after 1906 as the primary reference historical materials, reflects the land contradictions of the times, and highlights the efforts and contributions of people, especially local gentry,to Pudong Riverside and their leading and exemplary role in Shanghai and even the whole country. The fourth is to put Pudong Riverside in Shanghai Port to analyze its development and changes.Starting from the background, historical opportunities and status changes of Pudong Riverside, this chapter discusses the important role played by Pudong Binjiang as one of Shanghai Port Areas. In history, the Pudong Riverside developed sluggishly due to the separation of the Huangpu River;in modern times,it developed rapidly due to the Huangpu River. The development and opening of Pudong in the 1990 s brought new development opportunities for the Pudong Riverside.Through the study of the above issues, this thesis analyzes and summarizes the characteristics of time and space, personnel and materials in the development of Pudong Riverside in different periods from 1843 to1918,hoping to provide some experience and value for the current research on the history of Huangpu River and Shanghai and the comprehensive development of Pudong Riverside. |
