In the thesis, the translator takes articles from the book-promotion text of The Economist as source texts, guided by Nida’s functional equivalence theory,to discuss the translation strategies of the texts. The issues reported and analyzed by The Economist are not limited to the economic level, but also involve materials of major global news, political and social issues as well as finance, business, technology, art, culture and education, etc. The materials the translator selected from the book-promotion text belong to the cultural column.Complex sentence patterns, witty and humorous writing style, rigorous and powerful words are used in The Economist in which its main reader group is positioned as high-level intellectuals,so the professional and culturally-attached vocabularies that appear in large numbers in news writing are not explained. In view of the above characteristics, the translator conducts a case study on the translation of the book-promotion text in the body of the thesis, primarily analyze the pragmatic rules of the source text at the lexical, syntactic and discourse levels, and then summarize the English-Chinese translation strategies of such text in order to provide some useful references for the practice and shed a light on the English-Chinese translation of the book-promotion text in English news.
