| As an important component of English education,English reading is an important aspect when measuring students’ English comprehensive ability.Therefore,it’s crucial to improve students’ English reading ability in English teaching.In the current teaching of English reading in senior high school,however,because of the monotonous teaching method and test of assessment,the limited reading materials and etc,students generally lack interest in reading.So how to effectively improve students’ reading interest has become a vital topic in the field of English teaching.Literature Circles is one of the effective measures to improve students’ interest in reading which provides a student-centered teaching model.Students can choose the reading materials according to their interest,set their own roles in the group,and share their thoughts regarding reading materials through group discussions.In the whole reading process,teachers act as a guide and facilitator,making use of group cooperation and autonomous reading to guide students so as to stimulate students’ interest in reading and improve their reading ability.This study attempted to apply Literature Circles in English reading teaching in senior high school,thereby exploring the following three questions:1.What effect does Literature Circles have on students’ reading interest?2.What effect does Literature Circles have on students’ reading grades?3.How to effectively apply Literature Circles to reading teaching in senior high school if Literature Circles has positive effects on students’ reading interest and grades?In this study,141 students from Class 9 and Class 10 of Grade One in the Second High School,C City,Henan Province were selected as the subjects.Before the experiment,the pre-test was conducted in both classes to test students’ reading proficiency.By analyzing the grades of pre-test,it showed that the difference in reading proficiency between the two classes didn’t reach a significant level which ensured the feasibility of the experiment.During the experiment,Class 9 was selected as the experimental class,and Class 10 was the control class.The experimental class was adopted the teaching model of Literature Circles while the control class was adopted the traditional reading teaching model for a three-month teaching experiment.After the teaching experiment,the data of questionnaires and grades of pre-test and post-test in two classes collected before and after the experiment were analyzed quantitatively by SPSS 25 and the following conclusions were drawn combined with the interviews:1.The teaching model of Literature Circles can effectively raise students’ interest in English reading.2.With the help of Literature Circles in English reading teaching,students’ grades can be improved.3.When applying Literature Circles to English reading teaching in senior high school,teachers should pay attention to cultivating students’ sense of cooperation and autonomous reading ability,and providing students with reading strategies and skills,.In summary,this study holds that Literature Circles has a positive effect on students’ reading interest and grades.What’s more,based on the findings of the study,the author put forward corresponding suggestions such as focusing on cultivating students’ cooperative awareness,imparting reading strategies and skills to students in Literature Circles,with the aim of providing reference for improving the application of Literature Circles in the English reading teaching in senior high school. |
