Taijiquan,an important part of traditional Chinese culture,was listed the world intangible cultural heritage in 2020,which is becoming increasingly influential at home and abroad.The practice of Taijiquan has become popular worldwide due to its functions in keeping fit and health.In addition,its cultural connotations have aroused the interests of many foreign scholars.At present,although many English translations of Taijiquan texts have been produced,for most of them,there exist the problems such as the inconsistent terminologies and inadequate exposition on cultural connotations.Therefore,in the era of Chinese culture going global,the urgency of C-E translation of Taijiquan texts has become increasingly prominent.This report is based on the translation practice of an excerpt from Taijiquan Exercise Therapy: Theory and Practice.This book is a comprehensive work which contains not only the theories and frames of Taijiquan,but also covers relevant aspects as the health preservation of traditional Chinese medicine and the ideas of Chinese traditional philosophy.Hence,the expression in the source text is featured in both modern Chinese and classical Chinese.At lexical level,there exist the figurative and abstract terminologies.At syntactic level,there are many run-on sentences and expressions in classical Chinese.At cultural level,there intertwin the cultures of Taijiquan,traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese philosophy.Based on the characteristics of language expression of the source text mentioned above,variational translation theory is selected as the guidance to carry out the translation practice.Combined with the techniques of addition,edition,narration and alteration,case analyses have been presented on the contents of Taijiquan,traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese philosophy.The aim of this report is to communicate Taijiquan culture in a lucid text with accurate expressions to the world. |
