| The translation report is the English-Chinese translation of the English monograph Knitting: Fashion,Industry and Craft(excerpt)guided by variational translation theory.The author writes this translation report by conducting a case study based on the above-mentioned translation practice.The results of case analysis are as follows: In the case of “adding”,explanation and clarification are added in translation to fill the information gap due to the omission of the linguistic and the sociocultural information in the source language,and explanation is also added to clarify the contextualized meanings of certain words in the source language.In the case of “deleting”,omission is used to delete the redundant information that is unnecessary to translate,delete the connectives and the repetitive information in the source language.With regard to “editing”,the position of the adverbial and the attribute in the source language,and also the position of the main clause and the subordinate clause in the sourcelanguage compound sentence are restructured.Meanwhile,the source language information is modified by the use of adding and deleting in order to provide a clear and easy-to-understand information for the target language readers.The case analysis conducted herein shows that only by carrying out some appropriate adding,deleting and editing in the English-Chinese translation of apparel technical texts can we guarantee an accurate and natural text in Chinese,which is highly readable.This translation report has verified the applicability of the variational translation theory to the translation of apparel technical texts.It is hoped this translation practice can also provide some reference for the translation research and practice of apparel technical texts. |
