In the history of art, when foreign cultures blew across borders and completely different artistic exchanges took place, the mutual influence of different cultures and their unique fusion contributed to the development of art.Paul Gauguin was in the transitional period of modern art, building on the foundations of Impressionism and developing a more individual style of painting step by step.Gauguin pursued his own subjective expression, resulting in a post-Impressionist art that fully expresses his personal feelings. After the Impressionists turned their attention to the aesthetics of Eastern art,the Post-Impressionists began to draw more extensively on elements from other cultures.Among these,Oriental art, particularly Japanese ukiyo-e prints, had a major influence on Gauguin. The first unit of this essay examines the process by which Eastern art influenced Gauguin’s painting style, focusing on his early, middle and late works. In the early works,Gauguin depicts oriental fan compositions and oriental motifs and decorations;in the middle period,he not only borrows figures from oriental art,but also generalises and purifies the colours to create a flat effect;in the later works,he makes extensive use of oriental art and depicts oriental motifs. The compositional layout is interspersed with In his later works he makes extensive use of highly generalised, scattered compositions, organically incorporating Tahitian features.A summary of Gauguin’s art history and an analysis of his major works explore the underlying causes of his changing artistic conceptions. The second unit explores the formal features of Gauguin’s art, such as perspective composition, colour and line, followed by a brief introduction to the influence and inspiration of Gauguin’s art on later generations. The third unit focuses on the evolution of Gauguin’s painting, examining his artistic concepts and techniques to guide his own artistic production. It details the influence of Gauguin’s art on the author’s choice of subject matter, composition, colour and expression in his artistic creations.
