Since the beginning of this century, more and more countries and regions have stepped into the ranks of aging, and the physical and mental health of the elderly has been widely concerned. Therefore, this report selects an excerpt from Dr.Becca Levy’s work Breaking the Age Code as the translation text.In this book, scientific research is used to reveal the relation between the age beliefs of the elderly and their aging, thereby conveying to society the scientific concept that a positive age belief is beneficial to the physical and mental health of the elderly.Breaking the Age Code is a social science text with the purpose of popularizing scientific knowledge, and its language is accurate, rigorous and logical. In this book, professional terms and long sentences are frequently used, and the sentence structure is relatively complex, which makes translation difficult. Therefore, whether the target language readers can better understand the original text information depends on the accurate translation of long sentences in the text.Eugene A.Nida’s functional equivalence theory requires that in the process of translation, the original text should be taken as the center as far as possible, and efforts should be made to create a translation that conforms to the meaning of the original text and embodies its cultural features.Guided by the functional equivalence theory, this report analyzes the translation of long sentences in the social science text from the syntactic level by adopting translation strategies such as sequence method, reverse method, segmentation method and amplification method, striving to gain the similar reading feeling for both target language readers and source language readers. In addition, the translator hopes that through the translation of this book, people can understand the natural process of aging more rationally, and the society can better adapt to aging. At the same time, this translation practice can provide reference for the similar type of translation.
