A Report On The Translation Of North

Nowadays more and more people are fond of going hiking or running outdoors for fitness in their spare time.As a hiking and running enthusiast,the author chose the first four chapters of the book North—Finding My Way While Running the Appalachian Trail co-authored by Scott Jurek and Jenny Jurek as the translation practice task.Scott and Jenny are all legends in running.The book tells us how Scott,accompanied and encouraged by his wife and friends,successfully challenged the Appalachian national trail.People who challenged the Appalachian national trail normally headed from north to south,but Scott chose to challenge the long trail from south to north.He wanted to train himself mentally and physically and set a new speed record on the Appalachian national trail.Supported by his wife Jenny,Scott finally conquered the trial.North—Finding My Way While Running the Appalachian Trail is roughly an expressive text.Thus in the process of translation,the translator took the Functional Equivalence Theory as the translating guidance and adopted some translation methods to achieve lexical and syntactic equivalence.At the lexical level,there were many unfamiliar terms in the source language and the translator used annotation method to explain them.Polysemy is very common in English,and the choice of word meaning is the key to the quality of translation,so the translator adopted polysemy method.In addition,the translator adopted conversion method to transform the parts of speech of some words,so the translated version can be more smoothly.In order to fully express the meaning of the source language,the translator added some necessary linguistic elements in the source text.In addition,the translator used free translation to make the source information be easily understood by the target readers.There are many long and difficult sentences in the source language,and the translator translated them with syntactic linearity,splitting and reorganization.This translation report is divided into four chapters.The first chapter contains the reasons for this task,the content of the source text and the text analysis.The second chapter presents the translation process which covers preparations before translation,the introduction of the Functional Equivalence Theory,detailed translation process,repeated proofreading and the finalizing of the whole translation.The third chapter is the most important one: case analyses,which is divided into two parts: the lexical level and the syntactic level.The last chapter summarizes the gains andshortcomings of the translator in this translation practice.The translator hopes the book will encourage readers to take an active part in outdoor activities and stay healthy.At the same time,he also expects that this practice report can provide reference for others.
