In the early 20 th century, domestic scholars embarked on a journey to write their own literary history, and parallel prose of the Six Dynasties was included in literary history. At the same time, the first half of the 20 th century was a time of various literary movements colliding with one another, leading to changes in literary perspectives and literary history writing, which exhibited corresponding periodical characteristics.Based on the different focus and writing approaches towards parallel prose of the Six Dynasties in literary history, the first half of the 20 th century Chinese literary history can be divided into three stages, exploring the relationship between the writing patterns and literary views,as well as the historical views of parallel prose in literary history.Chapter 1 discusses the writing style(parallel prose written during the Six Dynasties period),exploring the early stages of Chinese literary history via the analysis of five literary masterpieces. Most of the writers of literary history in this period are traditional literati, who often take the internal evolution of literary style as the center, and write literary history for the purpose of surviving the history of classics and putting it into practice.the writing of parallel prose in the six dynasties generally revolves around the concept of words and chapters. While Dou Jingfan’s "Literary History of the Dynasties" and Lin Chuanjia’s "History of Chinese Literature" both focus on the combination and separation of parallel and free styles, they also have different values by which they judge the eras parallel prose.Huang Ren’s "History of Chinese Literature" accepts a purely literary concept but depreciates Six Dynasties parallel prose by demonstrating a mismatch between theory and practice.Wang Mengzeng’s "History of Chinese Literature" divides the development of the subject style into three periods. And lastly,Xie Wuliang’s "History of Chinese Literature" compares parallel prose with poems and Western articels, showing a clear awareness of distinguishing styles.Six Dynasties parallel prose published during the developmental period is addressed in Chapter 2.The writing of literary history at this stage is mostly an echo of the literary revolution of the May Fourth Movement.Based on language styles,Hu Shi clearly divided Chinese literary history into two parts: vernacular;and classical Chinese.During that period,Six Dynasties parallel prose was seen as a hindrance to the progress of vernacular literature.Xu Jiarui’s "Introduction to Medieval Chinese Literature" and Tan Zhengbi’s "Evolutionary History of Chinese Literature" detail the guiding intention of new generation of writers when recording literary history, and parallel prose was devalued because it did not conform to the collective ideology.Reformists written work,as represented by Gu Shi and Zeng Yi,exhibits the detachment between the literary values of aesthetics and moral education in Six Dynasties parallel prose.Chapter 3 covers the output of parallel prose in the 1930 s and 40 s based on the writings of Chinese literary history. At this time, the western concept of pure literature has become the consensus of scholars, the connotation and extension of literature have been clear, and the writing paradigm has been determined. The parallel prose of the six dynasties was endowed with the attribute of "beautiful literature" because of its emphasis on the sound and rhyme of words.Zheng Zhenduo adhered to the idea of ‘sentimental’literature and its purpose, diminished the contrast between parallel and free styles, and defined the applicable field of parallel prose in lyrical pieces. The parallel prose of the Six Dynasties is regarded as a special kind of poetry in Liu Bayai’s "History of Chinese Literature",which plays the role of connecting the preceding and the following between the prose of the Han Dynasty and the prose of the Tang Dynasty.Meanwhile,Liu Dajie posited the belief that parallel and landscape prose are new literary styles which were born during the aesthetic literary movement.Chapter 4 discusses the writing evolution of the parallel prose of the Six Dynasties in the first half of the 20 th century. The focus is on summarizing and sorting out the evolution of literary and historical views in Chinese literary history in the first half of the20 th century,as well as the changes in the focus and value evaluation of parallel prose in the Six Dynasties under the evolution of literary history. |
