This report, grounded on selected examples in Languages in A Globalising World, discusses the difficulties encountered in translating academic texts on the lexical and syntactical level, including common words,English words with suffix-ism,attributive and passive sentences. The author analyzes different translated versions under the guidance of Register Theory and accordingly adopts desirable techniques to address relevant problems, thus to improve the quality of translation and convey text contents effectively. On the lexical level, the author explores underlying meanings of words through the analysis of register, thus finding equivalent expression in target language. On the syntactical level, the author analyzes attributive and passive sentences on the grammatical and logical level. For attributive sentences, the methods of rendering into a premodifier and an independent sentence are applied to translation on the grammatical level;rendering into causational, adversative and conditional complex sentences are applied to translation on the logical level. For passive sentences, translating into sentences without subject, adding implied subject and passive forms with Chinese markers are applied to translation on the grammatical level;the methods of reversion between the receptor and actor and translating into sentences of active voice are applied to translation on the logical level.
