An E-C Translation Report Of Meeting The China Challenge Act Of 2021 From America Competition Act Of 2022

The content of this translation practice is the Division E of America Competition Act of 2022.The source text contains a series of American sanctions posed on China,including financial services,national security,dual technology and other aspects.Since these sections are closely related to the cooperation and activities of Chinese government and entities,it is necessary to translate the act and do some researches on the expressions of this legislative text so as to find more features of American legal language and enrich Chinese legal English translation and research.This report mainly introduces the three problems met in translation and their solutions.The three problems encountered are the translation of common words,discriminatory expressions and the noun phrases.In this practice,the translator used Catford’s translation shift theory.The translator analyzed the words and sentences in the source text and polished the translation with category shift and level shift.To solve the three problems,the translator revised the translation of common words based on legal analysis,represented the discriminatory color via free translation and restructured the noun phrases with level shift.What’s more,under the guidance of legal translation principles of concise and conformity,the translator improved the expressions to make the target text consist with the rigorous and accurate nature of legal language.In this translation practice,the translator found that the application of shift theory is beneficial for analyzing the words and sentences of the source text in details so that the sentence order in the target text is adjusted and restructured.Therefore,the translation expresses the meaning of the source text more accurately,objectively and scientifically.
