Application Of Semantic Translation And Communicative Translation In E-C Translation Of "The Remarkable Chester Ronning-proud Son Of China"

This project includes two parts: The Chinese translation of Chapter 1 and Chapter 3 of the book “The Remarkable Chester Ronning-Proud Son of China” and a translation report analyzing the strategies and methods used during the translation process.The book is the biography of Chester Ronning,a distinguished Canadian diplomat who was born and grew up in China.Due to his many years of living in China,he could well understand China and developed a strong affection for China.In his lifetime,he has made unremitting efforts to eliminate the misunderstandings about China in the western world and also made considerable contributions to the Canada-China relationship.As global exchanges and communications grow rapidly,the translation and distribution of this book could help us get familiar with Chester Ronning’s life associated with China and also could benefit to foster friendship between Chinese and Canadians.The selected text is translated under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation strategies.As a biography which shares the feature of documentary,thus names of people,places or historical events are largely involved,the translator has consulted many relative historical documents to ensure accuracy;according to semantic translation,amplification and literal translation with annotation are employed to make sure the contextual meaning of the selected text is fully transferred.As for the many differences between Chinese and English,the larger part of the selected text is translated under the guidance of communicative translation,some translation methods like restructuring,four-character phrase,turning the impersonal theme into the personal theme,turning the “static” into “the dynamic” are used to make the translation fit Chinese expressing habit and acceptable in Chinese culture,to enhance its readability.Through this project,the translator concludes that Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation strategies is suitable for guiding biography translation by adopting them properly according to concrete situation,together with some practical translation methods.
