At present,China is strengthening its international communication, and translation is an important way of cultural collision and development.Idioms and allusions are the essence of Chinese culture and witness the development of Chinese history and culture. Each idiom contains rich Chinese characteristics and reflects the wisdom, value and spirit of our ancestors. Therefore, the translator will take the idioms and allusions of Xingtai as an example to spread the Yanzhao culture at home and abroad. This report is based on the Chinese-English translation of the book Xingtai Idioms and Allusions, compiled by the Publicity Department of Xingtai City of the Communist Party of China, and published by Hebei People’s Publishing House.Xingtai has a civilization history of more than 3500 years. It is one of the earliest cities in the north. Many excellent idioms originated in Xingtai City,Hebei Provence, but few people studied and translated them. The translator will choose some typical idioms and allusions in the book to deal with three problems encountered in the translation process. The difficulties and solutions were described in the third chapter, which included uncertainty about cultural-loaded words, misunderstanding of run-on sentences, and lack of analysis on the textual level.Based on the above problems, the translator will use the Variational Translation Theory of Huang Zhonglian and adopt some techniques in this theory, such as adding, editing, integrating, condensing, and narrating,to analyze and solve the above problems. After finishing this project, the translator had a better understanding and application of the Variational Translation Theory.Besides, the translator realized that translation practice is a period to improve her bilingual knowledge, searching capability, and analytical ability. It is expected that this report can be helpful for foreigners interested in Yanzhao and Chinese culture and for the translation activities concerned as well. |
